Senate Elections to Be Held February 2024

PHNOM PENH: The Royal Government announced that Senate elections will be happening on February 25, 2024. The fifth legislature of the Senate will be instated by votes from commune councillors and fellow parliamentarians, all of whom currently belong to the reigning Cambodian People’s Party (CPP).

While the upcoming National Assembly election requires the participation of ordinary citizens, Cambodia’s Senate members, who have six-year terms, are elected by government officials. The 2024 election will see senators campaigning for 58 of the 62 Senate seats. Meanwhile, two seats will be appointed by the King and two by the National Assembly.

During the last Senate Election in 2018, the CPP won all 58 seats. The CPP also currently holds all 125 National Assembly seats. Political parties FUNCINPEC, the Cambodian Youth Party, and the Khmer National Unity Party also ran in the previous Senate Election but failed to get enough votes to win any seats.
